What is the Lake Erie North Shore wine region? Lake Erie North Shore is Ontario’s southernmost wine appellation, stretching from Amherstburg to Leamington along the north shore of Lake Erie, with over 20 wineries, world-class dining, live music, and unique accommodations right in the heart of Essex County.
Most people think Ontario wine country means Niagara. They’re missing something special.
Right here in Essex County — winding along the north shore of Lake Erie from Amherstburg through Harrow, Colchester, Kingsville, and Leamington — sits one of Canada’s most underrated wine regions. It’s called the Lake Erie North Shore appellation, and if you haven’t explored it yet, you’re in for a treat.
I’ll be honest — I’m biased. I live here. And I’ve spent many a Sunday afternoon biking from winery to winery with my girlfriends, sipping Cabernet Franc on patios overlooking Lake Erie, discovering wood-fired pizza that rivals anything I’ve had anywhere. This region has soul. And it’s growing fast.
Here’s your complete guide to Essex County wine country — from the wineries and their restaurants to live music events, the famous EPIC Wine Pass, and the most unique place to stay in the entire region.
Why the Lake Erie North Shore Produces Exceptional Wine
This isn’t just marketing. There’s real science behind why this region produces such exceptional wine.
The Lake Erie North Shore appellation sits at the 42nd parallel — the same latitude as northern California, Oregon, northern Italy, and New Zealand’s Marlborough region. This is the sweet spot for grape growing on the planet.
The shallow waters of Lake Erie warm quickly in summer and release that warmth slowly in fall, extending the growing season well beyond what you’d expect this far north. The result is early harvests — often beginning in late August — and late-harvest varieties that reach their peak by late October. The soil is a mix of sandy loam and gravel deposits over limestone bedrock, which drains beautifully and forces vines to work harder, concentrating flavour in the fruit.
Add over 1,400 acres of vineyards, longer sun hours and greater heat units than any other wine region in Canada, and you start to understand why the wines from this region keep winning international awards.
The EPIC Wine Pass — Your Key to the Region
Before you start planning, grab an EPIC Tasting Pass. EPIC stands for Essex Pelee Island Coast, and the pass gets you complimentary tastings, samples, and tours at up to 12 member wineries across the region. It’s the best value in Essex County wine country and makes a fantastic gift.
Check the EPIC Wineries website for current pass pricing, participating wineries, and upcoming events. They run seasonal festivals and collaborative events throughout the year that are well worth planning around.

Canada’s first adults-only glamping retreat, Lungovita sits on 16 acres with 600 feet of beachfront and an 80-foot cliff overlooking Lake Erie. The name means “long life” — and after a stay here, you’ll understand why. The property features:

North 42 Degrees, Oxley, and several other wineries are within easy biking distance. There’s something genuinely special about arriving at a winery on a cruiser bike, Lake Erie breeze in your hair, with no agenda except the next glass of wine.
