For fifteen years I watched Hogs for Hospice from a distance, always a Leamington event, always somebody else’s weekend. This year it’s rolling right through my own downtown, and if you live in Wheatley, this is the one to actually plan around — not just enjoy, but plan around, because there are real road closures involved.
What’s Happening in Wheatley
The Tour the Tip riders depart Seacliff Park in Leamington at 10:30 a.m., ride out to the tip of Point Pelee, then head into Wheatley for what Hogs for Hospice officially lists on its schedule as a “Ride Stop & Block Party” starting at noon. The ride heads back to Seacliff Park at 2:30 p.m., but downtown Wheatley keeps the party going until 4:00 p.m.:
- Destroyer Canada, a KISS tribute band, performs from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m.
- Allesandro plays from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m.
- The Village Resource Centre is on-site as a food vendor, serving BBQ sausage on a bun for $8, along with 50/50 raffle tickets and Car Barn Fundraising Dinner tickets in support of their Village Kitchen project.
- Organizers are encouraging people to bring a lawn chair and settle in.

Road Closures: What Wheatley Residents Need to Know
If you live or do business in the downtown core, this is the part that matters most. According to the notice distributed to residents and business owners:
- 9:00 a.m. — Streets in the closure area begin closing for setup. Expect delays and limited movement during this window.
- 11:45 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. — The area is fully closed once motorcycles arrive. No vehicle access in or out during this time.
- 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. — Roads reopen after cleanup and equipment removal.
The closure area covers Erie Street and Talbot Street through the downtown core, with barricades and posted detours routing traffic around the event. If you need to drive anywhere on August 1, plan to leave the closure area before 9:00 a.m. or wait until after 5:00 p.m. If you need to be in the area during the closure, park somewhere you won’t need to move your vehicle between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Emergency services maintain access throughout the day regardless of the closures.
